I have not read the book, but I certainly look forward to reading it this Easter holidays while floating in Paradise in Los Roques in Venezuela, aboard our own SIMPATICO, a 48´Amel Maramu ketch from 1981.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful book, even without reading it I think it is a fantastic gesture to share this with other sailors around the world.

Hi Terry,

Almost certainly this was caused by a poor wifi connection. The book is quite large because of the high resolution photos so that it will take a while on slow WiFi and often fail. See if you can find a better WiFi or better still use a wired connection.

Thank you very much for this beautiful gift. Its inspiring in many senses and worrying in others….
I am curious to know how these isolated communities get their energy (renewable?) and which is their perception on climate change.
I have made some web searching and couldn’ t find publications on the CAVIAR project. I would thank you a lot some links to related publications.
Your observations on unexpected wind blows were very interesting, which is the reliability of numerical weather predictions at these latitudes? Could polar orbiting sat pics obtained with systems such as Xaxero Skyeye be useful for nowcasting those conditions? Are these catabatic winds or related to other local phenomena?
And finally, how do they cook whale blubber? The photos reminded me of how we eat in Spain fried pork rinds (chicharrones) 😉

Hi Iñigo,

  • I generally find the GFS pretty good in the north, but it won’t help with local weather like Katabatics, other than to warn one that a pattern is setting up that will support them.
  • I have never used Skyeye, so I simply don’t know. My guess is it might be useful, but one would need a lot of knowledge and experience to interpret the pictures.
  • There are several different types of violent winds that can affect Greenland waters including Katabatics (cold) and Foehn (warm) winds. I have experienced both, but have not ever found any useful way to forecast them.
  • Whale blubber is normally eaten raw.
  • Energy in northern isolated communities almost invariable comes from diesel generators. Not ideal, but hard to design a viable renewable system in a place with little or no sunlight for half the year.
  • No sure what’s going on with CAVIAR, but I think it is now over. I do know that Greta has moved on to other, although related, things.
  • I do know that everyone she interviewed was both stunned and deeply concerned by the level and speed of warming that they had observed in less than a generation.

Hi Neil,

Posting another link is not going to help. I have just tested it for the third time on my iPad and it works fine. And many other people have also successfully downloaded it. There just is not a lot more I can do. I’m guessing that the problem you are experiencing might be due to slow WiFi. Also, it’s a big book. Are you waiting long enough? Could take 10 minutes or so on a slow connection.

You other option would be to download it onto a computer and then transfer it to your iPad.

Almost certainly WiFi issues. We get this all the time with the NCG and it has got a lot worse since everyone on the planet started streaming NetFlix.

I am having trouble downloading to my iPad as well. Speedtest shows ~2mbps download – do you consider that “slow wifi?”

Hi Maddox,

While 2mbps, is fairly slow, speed is not the only issue. If you are using a WiFi that is shared with a lot of other users that too can cause problems because WiFi is a fairly primitive protocol that does not handle multiple stations on the same frequency very well.

The bottom line is that the book does download fine to an ipad (I have tested it many times) so if it’s not working the WiFi is almost certainly the culprit.
