I have a couple of tape measures (one metric, the other imperial) in my tool bag, and even have a really nice digital calliper for when dead-nuts measurement is required, but the two measurement tools in my kit that get the most use are a cheap pocket calliper (top photo) and an even cheaper metal rule (below) .
Both are dual metric and imperial.
I recommend both for every cruiser’s tool bag. Buy two of each…they don’t float.
Drill gauge. Yes, I can measure the drill, fastener, and rope with calipers, but experience tells me that only a gauge let’s me know how the rope or fastener will actually fit in the hole.
As they say, measure twice, cut once. Measure 4 times if it is important.
Hi Drew,
I agree, and also have a drill and thread gauge, although it usually lives in my workshop. Another cool trick is to check diameter by inserting whatever it is into the hole in a drill index and then reading the size of the drill bit off. Not dead-nuts, but close enough for a lot of things.
