We have sailed the high northern latitudes for 16 years in our 56’ McCurdy and Rhodes aluminum cutter Morgan’s Cloud. In that time we have cruised 100,000 miles, visiting remote areas like the east coast of Greenland (three times), Baffin Island, Labrador, Arctic Norway and Svalbard (Spitsbergen), while developing a sailing style we call Attainable Adventure Cruising: techniques of preparation and execution that allow us, who are not even slightly intrepid, to visit some of the world’s more remote places while staying within our comfort zone—at least most of the time. We cruise the high latitudes not just to visit a place and move on, but to really experience it: to spend time with the people, to learn of the history and culture, to gunk-hole remote anchorages, to hike, to ski; to photograph and write about these wild places. Further north than the northernmost point of Alaska, Svalbard truly is another world.
