Hacking
As many of you are probably aware, hacking has become a huge problem on the internet. And the really scary thing is that many sites that do get hacked are then used by the hacker as an unwitting conduit to load damaging software onto the computers of those who visit the hacked site.
Hardening AAC
About a month ago, as part of our efforts to insure that you, our valued readers, are not damaged in this way, we hired a security company to monitor the Attainable Adventure Cruising web site and harden it against hacking.
An Unexpected Side Effect
However, a bug in one part of that hardening program has resulted in at least one reader being blocked from commenting and then receiving a message saying that their IP address was black listed—not fun.
A Difficult Situation
This puts us in a very difficult position since we need to make sure that the site is as secure as possible, but on the other hand we can’t have you, our readers, blocked from posting the comments that add so much to the site.
Please Help
The first thing we need to do is find out how widespread the problem is. To that end, if you have been blocked from commenting, could you please contact us with the details, including your IP address, which you can find here.
Thank You
And finally, a big thank you to Andrew from New Zealand, who first told us about this problem and who has patiently worked with us as we try to get it fixed.

test from me as well, good that you are taking these measures. I was one of the unlucky ones whose linkedin password was recently hacked, result was that my email was also hacked, used for spamming and that my credit card was cloned. All within days. All fixed now, but a lot of hassle.

Hi All,
What a wonderful helpful response, thank you all so much.
Please keep the tests coming. As at 13:50 GMT Tuesday, we made a change that might reintroduce the problem, so more testing would be much appreciated.
Thanks again.

test/question: will a VPN (virtual private network) protect against the dangers of this sort of hacking? i’ve just begun using HotSpot Shield,
thanks
John August 14, 2012 at 7:24 pm
Hi Sam,
A VPN will protect you from a hacker that tries to get your confidential information by listening into your WiFi signal (very easy to do), but it will not protect you from a site that has been hacked and has been loaded with malware.

so the hacker’s damaging software results in what what above commenter van staveren experienced with compromised email and cloned credit card ? my laptop is a simple system with everyday run-of-the-mill security, but i presume van staveren probably has a higher level of security leaving me to wonder what hope is there for me ? my impression is that hacking started years ago as more of a challenge for warped minds with enough programming knowledge to successfully try and that it has escalated significantly since then with no end in sight as the original challenge remains with security systems hardening up all along in response…great !!

Hi All,
Thank you so much. It does seem that it is a very isolated problem. So far the only incidence reported has been from a user in New Zealand, but that on two different ISPs. This stuff can make you crazy!
Anyway, it’s a great relief to know that the problem is not more widespread.
Having said that, we want to make sure that everyone is able to comment since comments are so much of what makes this site work and also are a lot of what inspires us to keep working at it.

Thanks for all your good work. We enjoy your website and its a useful reference. We also bought your Norwegian Cruising guide last season when we sailed across from Shetland to explore the lovely fjordland coast. Thanks for that also! My wife and I make a television show about sailing called “Distant Shores” and would like to send you a copy of the episodes with Norway in.
